Obscure II (Wii) - Review by jofra01

Introduction

ObsCure: The Aftermath, or ObsCure II to some, is one of the only few survival horror games on the Nintendo Wii but one to that will go over looked by many. The game is a sequel to ObsCure I, which wasn't released for the Nintendo Wii, but the game has a storyline that won't require gamers to have played the first one.

This is a game that also pushes the boundaries for some survival horror games as not only does it play on the genre well but it contains themes that no other game has contained, and won't be suitable to write about within this review.

Gameplay

Being a survival horror game the aim of this title is to pretty much survive the ordeal, which is weird flowers turnings students of a university into terrible creatures that have an objective of killing you and everyone else. The game sees you controlling around 6 different characters, all at different times though and without spoiling to much of the game some of these characters you will be glad die from their attitudes.

The basic gameplay elements within this game are similar to titles like Resident Evil 4 and Alone in the Dark how you walk around with weapons and creatures come out of no where to attack you, but it isn't that simple. The game does contain puzzles that require you to progress through the game whether it be rearrange the library to create a secret stair case or crack open a lock to grab a weapon. Interacting with the environment is a plus within the game as it is environment that is worth interacting with, but the camera sometimes does ruin this experience.

When it comes to actually fighting the evil creatures you usually have two characters with you at once, but can only control one at a time, you will find depending on what creature your fighting and what weapon you have you can easily die or win the battle. Some fights do actually prove to be annoying, especially against little bug like creatures, as using a handgun on them does prove to be difficult.

Now if your one that doesn't like playing horror games by yourself and needs someone around this game gives players the chance for that extra person to join in the fun. The second player usually controls the 2nd available character which provides a different but fulfilling unique coop mode.

Controls

The game contains a simple control setup, requiring only use of the WiiRemote and Nunchuk in a simple manner. The nunchuk is used to actually control where the player walks and what not while the WiiRemote is used to swing weapons around or aim at the screen to shoot your gun.

Controlling the characters does prove to be awkward sometimes due to the camera sometimes going wonky which can cause a inbalance when you are attempting to kill someone or something which does prove annoying sometimes.

Graphics

For a cheap Nintendo Wii title this game has a very well details 3D environment that does have interactions, and proves to have better graphics than most Wii games. Characters and enemies are well animated, but the creatures do lack some imagination due to their style and nature. The developers have also managed to pull of some very disturbing and gruesome scenes within the game that wouldn't please a person with a weak stomach. The game also contains pre-rendered cutscenes but they aren't overly good.

Sound

The game contains a rich soundtrack, that does suit the games atmosphere and mood quite well, but some songs aren't that notable. Voice acting is also provided for this game and although the voice is corny in some situations it is a nice addition to the game.

Final comments

ObsCure: The Aftermath is a great title that disappointingly has gone overlooked by many. Survival Horror fans will enjoy this game, that does so much better than most Wii games out on the Nintendo Wii and achieves what Alone in the Dark should have.

The game does push boundaries of the genre and does have its good moments and bad moments. Overall this is an enjoyable title within itself with the minor flaws being made up by that enjoyable within the game.
