Red Steel 2's Worldwide Sales Revealed
Speaking at his keynote earlier this week at GDC Europe, creative director Jason Vandenberghe revealed the worldwide sales of this year's Red Steel 2 and unfortunately, it's not good.
During his keynote speech, Vandenberghe discussed his thoughts on the state of motion control gaming, even going so far as to say that it needs to become the norm in the industry:
"I isolated this factor called audience willingness. There is a small group of people that is willing to get up and move and exert themselves for fun ... We had to ask ourselves: how many gamers are willing to move? I don't know how many there are, but it's no higher than 20 per cent. That's actually probably optimistic. Things might suck now, but I think they'll get better. If they put motion control standard in the box, suddenly the model expands. THAT is money. My recommendation to you is that you should ship on multiple platforms. Nobody will want you to. Sony won't, Microsoft won't, Nintendo won't. But the market will... Many genres will remain unchanged, and some people will still not want to exert themselves. But if the hardware remains an add-on, motion control will remain niche."
It was after this that the worldwide sales of Red Steel 2 were revealed. To date, the game has only managed to shift 270,000 units, including both the MotionPlus bundled version and the game solus. For such a big game on the Wii, the sales fall far behind those of the original game which managed well over a million units, and clearly Vandenberghe and Ubisoft are disappointed at this outcome.
Addressing this problem in his speech, Vandenberghe believed that while only releasing on a single platform and needing an additional peripheral were reasons for the low sales, he believes that ultimately the problem is a result of gamers being unwilling to get up and move when playing games.
It is disappointing to see such a fantastic game not being met with the success it deserves and doesn't bode well for future releases in the series, should there be any.

I didn't pick it up- but I was going to.
It's really too bad, I loved the game. What it lack in story line it made it up in action, as action game should be.
