In a recent interview to Meristation.com, Jim Merrick from Nintendo of Europe has confirmed that theres a chat function in Mario Kart DS. Update More Nintendo WiFi Connection details inside. Update2 Either Merrick was wrong or the translation bad, but we just heard another story...

Quote: If you don't know the people you are playing with, you won't be able to chat with them, to protect the privacy of the young users. On the other hand, if you play against a friend you'll be able to chat. Every DS has a MAC code, and you'll have to give this code to your friends to be able to play and chat with them.
Update More Nintendo WiFi Connection The interview as conducted by Meristation reveals more details of the Nintendo WiFi Connection. In the interview, Nintendo claims they're working on enabling 25.000 hotspots across Europe, that's a whole lot of McDonald restaurants... Also, the USB WiFi adapter is said to be available from November 25th for a price of €39.95. While this is nothing new, news on the adapter being compatible with Nintendo's upcoming console the Revolution is.
Update2 Either Merrick was wrong or the translation bad, but we just heard another story... According to the most recent story we heard, either Merrick supplied the wrong information on the chat-function in Mario Kart DS, or the translation performed was erronemous, but Mario Kart DS will not feature any kind of chat-function.

OPIONION!! Today I went into Toys r us and saw the ACWW,MArio KArt Ds, and Tonyhawk american wasteland box art I was going to shoplift them all what do you think should I or not? im going to get them and plus they didnt even have alarms attached to them.
no there is chat...I am Spanish and I read the article. At first it seems that there is no chat because he doesn't directly state it, but in the next paragraph he makes it clear that you can chat with your friends. i understand why there is confusion because the way Merrick worded it, but to my knowledge he DOES say that you can chat with your friends, not strangers though.
No chat awww...well they better work it out and include it in othere games...or well ill just use animal crossing...now to hack my schools wep, I need a laptop and 2-24 hours...or ask a person who knows it...hm...hm....this wont be easy...

@ skarmachild, Just because YOU knew this info, doesn't mean everyone does. Just one more thing, when they say "chat" does it mean a Pictochat type thing that is useable in MKDS, or "chat" as in actually "chatting" through the mic built-in to the DS? I am 100% its not the latter, but still, can't be too sure.

..yes it is. I chatted to a guy at NoE at a big event and they said it was possible. Plus they've announced it in a really old news piece on NoE. So yes, it is old. But still cool.
